FBCM Doctrinal Position Statement

These are Statements of Belief of the Members of First Baptist Church of Merrifield.

INSPIRATION OF SCRIPTURE

We believe the Word of God is without error or contradiction; is inspired by God; provides the only true way for spiritual growth; and its truth will be preserved throughout all generations. (Psalm 33:11; 119:160; Isaiah 40:8; 1 Peter 2:2)

SALVATION

We believe one’s true acceptance of Christ as Lord and Savior results in one being baptized by the Holy Spirit, thus becoming a believer (saint) and being adopted into the Family of God; and this adoption is irrevocable.  We also believe saints cannot lose their salvation. (John 1:12; 3:16; Romans 8:14-17, 35-39; 11:29; Psalm 37:28; Ephesians 4:30)

THE HOLY SPIRIT

We believe the Holy Spirit is a person who empowers believers to perform God-ordained works; He is one whom the believer should be filled; and evidence of His fullness is described in Galatians 5 and Ephesians 5. (John 14:16-17, 26; 16:7-15; Galatians 5:22, 23; Ephesians 2:10; 5:18-21)

SPIRITUAL GIFTS

We believe in the manifestation of spiritual gifts discussed in Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, and 1 Corinthians 14; each believer has been entrusted with at least one spiritual gift; and the manifestation of the spiritual gifts is essential to the spiritual and temporal well-being of the Church. (Romans 12:4-8; 1 Corinthians 12:4-30; 14:27-31, 39, 40; Ephesians 4:11, 12)

We believe God’s Vision for First Baptist Church of Merrifield provides the framework necessary for determining the allocation and application of time, spiritual gifts, and temporal resources of all members of First Baptist Church of Merrifield. (Proverbs 29:18; Luke 14:28-30; 1 Peter 4:10)

SPIRITUAL GROWTH

We believe Christian Education is essential to the spiritual growth and development of all believers. (Ephesians 4:11-16; 2 Timothy 3:16, 17)

GRACE GIVING

We believe Grace Giving is not an obligated, predetermined amount of money as was the Jewish tithe (10%) in the Old Testament.  Grace Giving is a voluntary and cheerful demonstration of the believer’s faith in God, love for God, and appreciation for what God has done for him/her. Thus, when one gives because of God’s grace, the amount of the “gift” will often be significantly more than 10% of the financial resources with which God has entrusted him/her. (Luke 6:38; 1 Corinthians 16:2; 2 Corinthians 8:12-15; 9:6-15)

We believe the Church is supported financially by Grace Giving, and not by fund-raising programs and activities. (Luke 21:1-4; Acts 20:35; 2 Corinthians 8:12-15; 9:6-15; Philippians 4:19)

YOUTH/YOUNG ADULT DEVELOPMENT

We believe our youth (pre-teens, teens) and young adults are being prepared today for leadership responsibility, and the resources and support we dedicate for their benefit are well and wisely invested. (Psalm 71:17; Proverbs 22:6; Matthew 19:14; 2 Timothy 3:14, 15; 1 John 2:12-14)

THE BELIEVER’S PRIORITIES

We believe the believer’s priorities are: FIRST—Personal relationship with God, SECOND—Family, THIRD—Job/School, FOURTH—Church work, and FIFTH—Social Organizations.  We also believe maintaining these priorities is critical to sustaining an appropriate spiritual and mental balance in the believer’s life. (Matthew 6:33; Ephesians 5:22; 6:4; 2 Thessalonians 3:10; 1 Timothy 5:8; 1 Corinthians 12:14-27; Romans 12:6-8; Philippians 3:7; Hebrews 13:9)

INSTITUTION OF MARRIAGE

We believe marriage is a God-ordained institution and that He has established the sanctity (holiness) of the marriage bed.  God’s divine purpose for sexual relations is between a husband and a wife (man and woman).  We also believe sex outside of the martial relationship is a sin. (Genesis 2:21-25; 1 Corinthians 6:18, 19; Ephesians 5:18-33; Hebrews 13:4)

ABORTION

We believe abortion is the murder of an unborn (conceived) baby, and is therefore a sin that interrupts God’s divine plan for continuance of humankind. We also believe while God loves and stands ready to forgive the penitent believer responsible for the abortion, He condemns the act of abortion. (Psalm 127:3; 139:13-16; Jeremiah 1:4, 5; 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20)

HOMOSEXUALITY

We believe homosexuality is an abomination to God and is a sin to which a spiritual remedy must be applied.  We also believe while God loves and stands ready to heal the person, He condemns the sin. (Genesis 2:18, 20-22; Leviticus 18:22; 20:13; Romans 1:24-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

CHURCH LEADERSHIP

We believe the only Church offices identified in the Scriptures are Pastor and Deacon, who are responsible for the overall leadership of the Church; and that other positions are established by the Church to complement and support the Pastor and the Diaconate. (1 Thessalonians 5:12, 13; 1 Timothy 3:1-13)

We believe the Articles of Faith set forth in the Hiscox Directory and the Baptist Church Manual provide a suitable foundation for Christian beliefs and conduct. (Principles and Practices for Baptist Churches, Baptist Church Manual)
